Eligibility
Current undergraduates and eligible recent graduates both have a place in the CUNY Theatre Festival. We want you to feel welcome bringing your story to the stage.
Eligible
If you are currently enrolled as an undergraduate at one of the seven participating colleges, you are eligible and invited to submit an original play. Students from any major are welcome.
Eligible
If you graduated from one of the seven colleges in Spring 2025 or later, you are also welcome to submit. If selected, you become the playwright-producer and choose one currently enrolled undergraduate from the same college as a core production partner. Together you build a team of 5 to 10 people, including you and 4 to 9 enrolled undergraduates. Your partner may hold any production role and does not need to be a co-writer. You may choose your partner after selection.
The seven colleges are Hunter College, City College, Queens College, Brooklyn College, Lehman College, York College and the College of Staten Island. Campus participation is still being coordinated.
If you are not a theatre major or minor, partner with a theatre major or minor from your college before production begins. You may submit while still looking. Graduate-school enrollment alone does not establish eligibility. The Spring 2025-or-later degree rule above applies.
Four ways in
You can submit a play, join a selected production team, help read submissions or carry the invitation across your campus.
Current undergraduates are eligible and invited to send one original play, twenty to twenty-five minutes long. Recent Spring 2025-or-later graduates are also welcome to submit.
Each selected play gathers its own campus team across performance, stage management, design and crew.
Two Play Selection Committee seats are planned per college. Current undergraduates are eligible. Graduates from Spring 2025 or later are also welcome if they are currently enrolled in an MA program at the same college and remain part of its active student body. Candidates need 25 student signatures and a theatre faculty or department-chair signature, followed by a campus vote. Run for a seat.

If selected, the graduate becomes the play's playwright-producer and chooses one currently enrolled undergraduate from the same college as a core production partner. You are also welcome if you completed a degree at one of the seven listed CUNY colleges in Spring 2025 or later. Current graduate-school enrollment by itself does not establish eligibility.
Each selected play gathers its own campus team to produce the work during Spring 2027. Teams have up to 10 people across cast and crew, plus one required faculty advisor who does not count toward that cap. Performers are enrolled undergraduates from the college represented. A graduate-led team has 5 to 10 people including the graduate playwright-producer and 4 to 9 enrolled undergraduates from that same college. Productions must be ready by the end of May, attend tech June 21 to 24, and perform on June 25 and 26.
